How did you change your English speaking and listening skills ?
I had been already quite skilful in reading, so I focused mostly on speaking and writing exercises. My writing and especially speaking ability was elevated to a completely new level. I had not been able to speak in a fluent and casual manner, and there were some difficulties to understand many of the native speakers because of different accents. After the course I was able to participate in job interviews (both phone-based and in-person) and communicate with different people during my travels.
My writing skills stayed modest mostly due to me being unfamiliar with writing by hand in English, which was a requirement for the exam (and it really took ages to write something by hand for me). However, I was able to pull myself together and learn how to write small essays-like communications in a structured and well-argued way.
What techniques helped you best to improve ?
It is difficult for me to say which techniques helped me best to improve, however I can say which ones I liked the most:
• Setting and preparing a conversation topic which is close to me (for verbal exercises and essays)
• Discussing the current world issues
• “Shower conversations”
• Listening presentations from speakers with various accents

Before I had always deemed myself incapable of truly learning a foreign language. However, it has been proven that I was wrong.

I needed preparation for interviews to find a job in Devon. I was a Taxi driver for some time and needed to get a better job. I had taken a degree in Portugal where I was born and lived most of my life and had professional qualifications as an engineer.

Hello, my name is Carlos Ferrer and I live in a small town close to Valencia, Benetússer. By 2014 I had an ongoing plan to do a Post Graduate Course at the Said Business School at Oxford in England and, consequently improving my English language skills was very high on my list of priorities at that time.
